DESCRIPTION

Unlike many Linux distributions that cater primarily to technical users, Ubuntu provides a clean interface, easy-to-use applications, and close to foolproof security. However, under the snazzy exterior is a full-featured, powerful core that offers all the features you’d expect from a top-notch Linux server. To take full advantage of Ubuntu as a server, you need more than a friendly user’s guide; you need a thorough, comprehensive reference that tackles the issues you face when setting up and administering Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Server in Action is the first book dedicated specifically to Ubuntu Linux in the server setting. It is a comprehensive and broad look at server administration. This book will teach you everything you need to build and administer Ubuntu Server. Uniquely suited to both beginner and expert alike, Ubuntu Server in Action is the perfect starting point for those new to Ubuntu, whether they are beginning system administrators, or have experience with other operating systems or other Linux distributions.

This book gives new Linux system administrators the knowledge they need to provide a broad range of services to their clients. Ubuntu home enthusiasts will find the power to go beyond desktop applications and utilize their home network to its fullest potential. For experienced system administrators this book provides a refresher on server techniques with a special emphasis on Ubuntu Linux. From installation, to networking, to user services, Ubuntu Server in Action has everything a server administrator needs to successfully run an Ubuntu Linux server in a broad range of environments.

Canonical, Ubuntu's sponsor company, now offers the Ubuntu Certified Professional certification. With Ubuntu Server in Action you’ll get the nuts and bolts coverage you’ll need to master Ubuntu and prepare for your certification.

WHAT'S INSIDE:

About the Authors

Matt Galvin has been a Linux user since the early days and an Ubuntu user from day 1. He has over 12 years of experience using a vast range of Linux distributions in both small and very large environments. Matt has worked professionally as a Systems Engineer, Network Security Consultant, and Software Developer using all the major operating systems and hardware platforms (and some obscure ones). Matt has been an active contributor to the Ubuntu Starter Guide, the Ubuntu Documentation Team, and started the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter and the Ubuntu Development Release Tours.

Jordan Mantha has been an avid Linux user for several years and an Ubuntu user since 2005. He is currently a PhD student in Physical Chemistry at the University of Nevada, Reno. Jordan has been an active contributor to Ubuntu development since Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger), working on the community-maintained software repository, official documentation, and sitting on the Edubuntu Community Council. He is the maintainer and lead writer of the Ubuntu Packaging Guide, the official Ubuntu guide to creating software packages for inclusion in Ubuntu.

Jerome S. Gotangco started developing software solutions running on GNU/Linux in 1998 and is currently managing technology projects running on Ubuntu for a non-profit in the Philippines. He is a frequent speaker and writer focusing on Ubuntu, cryptography, documentation and free and open source software issues. He has been involved with various aspects of Ubuntu community development since Ubuntu 5.04 , and previously served as Vice President of the Philippine Linux Users Group, He is now a member of the Edubuntu Community Council.

Jeff Schering installed Linux for the first time in the spring of 1999. He chose Slackware because he had heard that it was the most difficult Linux distribution to install. His theory was that the harder the task the more he would learn. He later switched to Linux From Scratch (LFS), building his own systems from the ground up. Since then he has taken the easy route, running Mandrake until Ubuntu came along. He is a technical writer by trade, and a programmer hobbyist.
